The Mill Lofts
Norfolk, VA (circa 1890’s)
McPherson Design Group completed contract documents for this project, which includes the renovation of the 1890’s Lambert’s Point Knitting Mill in Norfolk, Virginia. Sitting on the northwest corner of 44th Street and Colley Avenue, the property is located minutes from Old Dominion University campus and offers easy access to the river. A gated community, Knitting Mill includes 25 mid-level to upscale apartment units featuring high quality baths and kitchens. A new mezzanine loft at the second floor level was added, along with an atrium to bring more light to the interior units. Working closely with the developer to adapt this once industrial structure for reuse as residential space, the designers focused on the elements which made this building unique. The original hard-wood floors were preserved as well as the “Art Moderne” glass block windows, which were added in the 1950’s during the expansion and modernization of the facility.
