Recreation Sports Fitness Center
College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia
McPherson Design Group worked with The College of William and Mary to renovate and expand the Recreation Sports Fitness Center. The new addition to the facility has a 2-story building area of approximately 40,000 square feet that increased the total building area to approximately 83,000 square feet. The desired style and character was one that related both to the style of the existing Recreational Sports Center and the other adjacent academic buildings, while simultaneously meeting the Design Guidelines intent to unify the images of the north and west campuses. The exterior design complements the existing architecture in material and form and creates a new entry facade that faces central campus. The new addition seamlessly connects to the existing building and enlarged the fitness and cardio-recreation areas. The renovated fitness areas feature a new climbing wall and multi-purpose classrooms for aerobic exercise alongside the existing racquetball courts. A new 2-story multi-purpose court gymnasium has been built adjacent to the main entry. Additional office space rounds out the new addition space for the recreation sports program. In addition, the existing gymnasium, natatorium (pool), and locker areas received minor modifications and upgrades. In keeping with the College’s commitment to high performance design, the project was certified with the US Green Building Council’s LEED Rating System, making it the first certified recreation center in the Southeast.
