Police Security and Operations Facility, United States Department of the Navy, Naval Amphibious Base
Little Creek, Norfolk, Virginia
McPherson Design Group completed contract documents for this design-build project, which included three (3) buildings totaling approximately 25,000 square feet of new construction on a previously developed site. This project included the Police Security and Operations Facility, a four-dog Kennel, and an Emergency-Vehicle Garage for force security and protection functions at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. The Police Security and Operations Facility is a concrete masonry and structural steel building with brick veneer, a shallow foundation, and a modified bituminous roof. It includes space for administration, investigative operations, classroom training, laboratory functions, detention, armory, and locker rooms. Our Design Team for this project received the 2008 Hampton Roads Associate Commercial Real Estate (HRACRE) Design Award of Excellence for Best Sustainable Design Project. According to the Judges, “The Design Team went above and beyond what they were asked to achieve – easily achieved LEED Silver Certification when only basic was required…” Completed in January 2008, this Project achieved a Silver Rating on a fixed budget using standard construction practices and off-the-shelf materials. During construction, live oaks and a strand of mixed trees were protected. Carpooling and ultra-low emission vehicles get preferred parking. Dry retention ponds filter and infiltrate stormwater. Waterless urinals and low-flow fixtures reduce the use of potable water. The main building was sited to work with solar orientation. Energy saving features included an efficient chiller and boiler, a highly reflective roof, a high-performance building envelope and occupancy sensors to control electric lighting. Eco-friendly features include tankless water heaters, FSC-certified wood, and materials with low chemical emission. Since the Facility is located on a Naval Base and is used for policing activities, our design also included antiterrorism and police-force protection features.
