Cape Henry Lighthouse, Fort Story
Virginia Beach, Virginia (circa 1792)
Our office was hired by Preservation Virginia in August 2011 to perform a structural evaluation of the Cape Henry Lighthouse to determine whether it was safe to open to the public after an Earthquake. We completed field investigation of the structure and provided a Report to Preservation Virginia advising that the structure was safe, while also recommending some repairs to the structure. A major aspect of the recommended repairs was that embedded rusted items were causing vertical cracks throughout the structure. We recommended that those items be dug out and replaced and installed several crack monitors. We completed another project at Cape Henry Lighthouse in April of 2015 for Preservation Virginia, which included field investigation to verify that the top of the lighthouse is not shifting in relation to the masonry tower. Cape Henry Lighthouse is on the National List of Historic Places.
