Thomas Jefferson School Lofts
Suffolk, Virginia
McPherson Design Group completed contract documents for this project, which included turning the former Thomas Jefferson Middle School (circa 1900’s) into “one of the most unique housing options in Hampton Roads”, which includes office space and 16 residential units. More than $4.2 Million total improvements have been made to the historic 16,260 square foot building. This mixed-use/mixed-income (MUMI) complex appeals primarily to empty nesters, young professionals, and entrepreneurs who favor the neighborhood’s urban lifestyle and range of amenities within walking distance. The project was funded with Historic Tax Credit equity and VHDA through the MUMI Program. Historical elements were preserved throughout this property, including the original chalkboards on the walls of each apartment. Other architectural elements, such as the hardwood floors and high ceilings, were incorporated into our design to preserve the renovated school building’s historical character. In 2010, our Design Team won a Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate (HRACRE) Award for Best Renovated/Historic Rehabilitation for this project.
