Colonna’s Shipyard
Norfolk, Virginia
McPherson Design Group has completed numerous projects at Colonna’s Shipyard, including the design of new structures, additions to existing buildings, and structural evaluations of various structures at the Shipyard. MDG competed three phases of additions to Building 7 at Colonna’s Shipyard. Each of these phases included structural contract documents, construction administration and special inspections. Phase I was completed in 2005 and included a 21,000 square foot extension of the Machine Shop and the Fabrication Shop. Phase II was completed in 2012 and included a 20,000 square foot addition that would be attached to the 2005 addition. Phase III was completed in 2015 and included the demolition of an existing 3,300 square foot of the building and the design of a new 5,900 square foot addition. Throughout the completion of the Building 7 additions, MDG provided design for two new 30-ton cranes, two new 50-ton cranes and twelve 2-ton jib cranes. The cranes allowed for extension out of an exterior wall. The foundations for the cranes included the building slabs, which were designed for a live load of 1000psf.
