North Shore Vehicle Maintenance Facility, Hampton Roads Sanitation District
Newport News, Virginia
The HRSD North Shore Vehicle Maintenance Facility – Phase IV project provides a new administration and storage facility for Hampton Roads Sanitation District. The purpose of the project is to consolidate HRSD’s forces on the North Shore into a single facility and to replace the existing maintenance facility on an adjacent site. The existing 11 acre site is adjacent to Newport News Williamsburg International Airport and includes an existing HRSD vehicle maintenance facility. Sitework includes removal of an abandoned wastewater treatment facility and a former composting facility. Site improvements include parking for 90 employees and vehicles, 82,000 s.f. of gravel equipment yard storage, bulk material storage bins, internal circulation drives and aprons for tractor trailors, security perimeter fencing with access control gates, and required utilities and storm water facilities. The project will also include a covered gasoline and diesel fueling station. The building functions are housed in a single structure that forms a U shaped footprint. Administration and engineering functions occupy 22,000 s.f. in the front two story wing, which is clad in brick veneer with ground face CMU accents and storefront windows. The 9,900 s.f. middle wing houses the service functions which include parts storage, vehicle service bays, machine shop, and apprentice training classrooms. The remaining 14,200 s.f. wing houses enclosed parking for HRSD’s fleet of service vehicles. This wing also includes a 7,200 s.f. mezzanine for storage of valves, fittings, and other supplies. The service and storage wings are clad with ground face CMU to 10’ and metal building cladding above to a 23’ eave height. The project is being designed to LEED v3.0 Silver standards.
