Portsmouth Public Library-Churchland Branch
City of Portsmouth, Virginia
The location of Coleman’s Nursery, a city landmark renowned for its Yuletide displays for over 60 years, serves as a new "Hub" for Portsmouth–Churchland Library. McPherson Design Group assisted in the design of this 20,564 square foot state-of-the-art library that serves the collective needs of civic groups, neighborhoods, associations, and city-wide agencies. Adjacent to the recently renovated YMCA, this remarkable structure adds greater function and even more recreational/educational opportunities for citizens of all ages. The white ground face CMU veneer and aluminum window systems exterior is sleek and contemporary, yet remains in perfect harmony with its immediate surroundings. Long, blue reflective glass in aluminum storefronts and curtain wall systems add depth and character to the overall dimension of the building while reflecting the natural beauty of the new landscape. The design incorporates organic themes with an explosion of natural light. Particular attention was also paid to those details that further reduce exterior noise and seasonal glare from the sun. This project received the 2009 Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate (HRACRE) Award for Best Institutional/Public Building.
